The NSW Convict Indents 1788-1842 collection contains a wealth of information on convicts being transported to NSW including their offence. Some of the common crimes noted in the records include things like sheep stealing, picking pockets and robbery but one lady was convicted of “offering her child for sale to a surgeon”!
Honora Mc Carthy, a widow from County Cork in Ireland, was sentenced to life imprisonment for her crime - although considering she was 70 years old at the time, she probably didn’t spend too much longer in jail. It has left us wondering though who’s child did she try to sell?
